Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, together with over 45 years of successful clinical application. The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma. SE offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states. It provides effective skills appropriate to a variety of healing professions including mental health, medicine, physical and occupational therapies, bodywork, addiction treatment, first response, education, and others.  (via traumahealing.org)

I believe that conveying information about the nervous system, how it responds to trauma, indicators of what trauma looks like in the body and various ways in which it can manifest, helps my clients gain a better understanding of their own internal experiences and provides skillful tools with which to manage their discomfort. I provide my clients with opportunities to build mind/body awareness in order to learn to identify uncomfortable experiences while gently moving their attention toward healthy resources, using skillful self-regulation skills. I approach my work with Somatic Experiencing® and yoga from a place of compassion and kind awareness, tapping into my personal experiences with trauma and almost 30 years of recovery from addiction.

I use my extensive study of yoga and trauma-aware movement in conjunction with SE™ to facilitate increased body awareness and nervous system repair.  I strive to help my clients experience a broader spectrum of their human experience in order to feel more alive and present in their bodies and minds. I work with adults, teens,  individuals in treatment from addiction and/or in a mental health crisis, and incarcerated populations. I am sensitive to issues around race, gender expression, sexuality, culture, body image and issues around antisemitism. I believe in the power of SE™ both from witnessing the increased resonance and coherence in my clients and from experiencing it in my own physiology.

I believe everybody can experience the benefits of Somatic Experiencing®, whether the “something” causing suffering is recent or if it happened decades ago.

The founder of Somatic Experiencing®, Dr. Peter Levine, reminds us that: “Trauma is in our nervous systems, not in the event.”

SE™ helps us release these stuck patterns of trauma from the body/mind to balance and reorganize the nervous system and restore the entire being into its innate wholeness. As Dr. Abi Blakeslee always says, “SE is sneaky powerful.” She’s right. It’s been the modality that has changed my life profoundly and provided the missing puzzle piece in my healing practice. One thing I know for sure, we can’t think our way out of trauma, we have to feel our way out.

I look forward to working with you!
