Take Refuge

Take Refuge

Mondays in Silverlake at One Down Dog, I teach a Refuge yoga class;  it’s become one of my favorite classes to teach. Each week, we venture into one of the folds of the 8-fold path as outlined in the Refuge Recovery book and we integrate that into 75 minutes of a mindful vinyasa practice. Each pose is intentional, with the invitation to investigate and pause or to go deeper. It’s not about competition or creating an untenable edge; it’s about showing up as we are in this moment, on this day. We leave the bullshit at the door; We find humor, we laugh, we cry, we dance, we are present.

I leave grateful and inspired by everyone’s practice. I am grateful that we are given the opportunity to create a mindful movement practice dedicated to our recovery, be it recovery from addiction, mental illness, or the overall suffering of being human. We all suffer from an addiction to craving pleasure to avoid pain; We all have a place in this class.

Refuge: a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble.
